The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has developed a consultation regulation impact statement (C-RIS) that considers a number of options and impacts for a proposed model of designated registered nurse (RN) prescribing.
The proposed designated RN prescribing model will enable RNs with an endorsement for scheduled medicines to prescribe within their level of competence and scope of practice in partnership with an authorised prescriber such as a medical practitioner or a nurse practitioner. The designated RN prescriber will have an authorisation to prescribe medicines that is determined by legislation and will meet the requirements of the NMBA related to the endorsement and the policies of the jurisdiction, employer or health service.
The proposed registration standard and associated guidelines are included in the C-RIS for context, however they have already been widely consulted on and were broadly supported, and as such the NMBA is not consulting on the content of the registration standard or associated guidelines.
Read about what a C-RIS is and how you can have your say on what the social, economic and environmental impacts of the proposed options for designated RN prescribing could be on our consultations webpage.
