A video explaining the renewal of registration process for nurses and midwives was launched today.
Over 360,000 nurses and midwives are due to renew their general or non-practising registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (the NMBA) by 31 May.
The NMBA’s role is to keep the public safe by ensuring only suitable, qualified and competent nurses and midwives are registered to ensure the provision of quality nursing and midwifery care.
Nurses and midwives are required to renew their registration by 31 May every year. This is to ensure they are meeting the requirements of registration, including recency of practice and continuing professional development (CPD).
NMBA Chair, Dr Lynette Cusack RN, said the video explained the renewal process and she urged, in particular, nurses and midwives who are soon to renew their registration for the first time to watch it.
‘The video clearly describes how quick and easy online renewal is,’ she said.
‘In less than four minutes the video explains how to access online renewal, what you must declare about your previous 12 months’ practice, how to pay the registration fee and what happens next.’
Dr Cusack welcomed feedback about the video via email to nmbafeedback@ahpra.gov.au.
‘The video is an engaging way for nurses and midwives who are unfamiliar with online renewal, or who lack the confidence to renew online, to learn more about the process.’
The video is available on the NMBA’s Registration renewal page. It can also be watched on the YouTube channel of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
AHPRA CEO Martin Fletcher congratulated nurses and midwives on having one of the highest online renewal user rates of all the health professions in the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.
‘Last year, 97.5 per cent of nurses and midwives renewed their registration online and on time - a 2 per cent increase in the online renewal rate for 2014,’ he said.
‘I anticipate a further increase in the online renewal rate for nurses and midwives following release of this video ahead of online renewal being launched later this month,’ Mr Fletcher said.
Nurses and midwives are reminded to update their contact details recorded with AHPRA to not miss the renewal reminders to renew.
This is easily done by logging in to online services via the homepages of the NMBA or AHPRA websites. A User ID and current password are needed to log in.
Online renewal will be launched at the end of March, after the Easter holiday, so look out for an email reminder as confirmation that online renewal is open.
A series of email and hard copy reminders will be sent by AHPRA on behalf of the NMBA throughout the renewal period.
AHPRA supports the NMBA by managing the initial registration of nurses and midwives and the registration renewal process.
