Assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives

The Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Committee (Assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives) has been established by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to oversee the assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives.

Terms of reference

Under its Terms of Reference the Accreditation Committee (Assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives) is responsible for: 

  • oversight of the pre-registration assessment of the knowledge, clinical skills and professional attributes of internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNM) wanting to register in Australia, and
  • making recommendations and giving advice to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia about issues relating to the pre-registration assessment of IQNM and associated matters.

The Accreditation Committee (Assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives) is not responsible for:

  • development and review of accreditation standards, and
  • accreditation of programs of study and education providers.

These functions are carried out by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).

The Accreditation Committee (Assessment of overseas qualified nurses and midwives) is also not responsible for setting registration standards, registering health practitioners, or investigating complaints about health practitioners.
